Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman announced his campaign for New York governor, setting up a Republican primary against Rep. Elise Stefanik. Blakeman is highlighting his long resume, including service as a commissioner on the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and on the Hempstead Town Council, along with various runs for public office. He’s emphasizing his executive experience, pointing out that he hasn’t raised taxes and has improved Nassau County’s bond rating.
When asked about reports that former President Donald Trump tried to dissuade him from entering the race, Blakeman rejected the implication and said Trump had spoken positively of him. Stefanik has secured commitments from a large majority of GOP county chairs, meaning Blakeman must convince some to switch or collect signatures to qualify for the ballot. He claimed many party leaders now believe his executive background gives him an edge.
Blakeman criticized Governor Kathy Hochul’s spending priorities, saying funds have been misallocated toward services for undocumented migrants rather than tourism, farming, and infrastructure. The Hochul campaign fired back, accusing Blakeman of aligning with Trump’s tariff policies that they say hurt New Yorkers. Blakeman and Stefanik share similar positions on energy and crime but differ on abortion, with Blakeman describing himself as a pro-choice Republican.
